Well, thank the holy fucking Christ that I didn't buy this movie, because A Serious Man is AWFUL.
Maybe it's because I'm not Jewish. Maybe I'm too stupid and there's some bigger sort of symbolism at play that I just don't understand. Or, MAYBE it's a movie about a family where nothing happens and then it's over.
Look, I figure I'm a pretty big fan of the Coen Brothers. NOT just The Big Lebowski, though it is my favorite movie. From Raising Arizona, Barton Fink, The Hudsucker Proxy and Fargo through O Brother Where Art Thou?, The Ladykillers, No Country For Old Men, and Burn After Reading, The Coen Brothers have been on a roll with very few down points.
But this, most certainly, is a down point. For a comedy, there's practically nothing funny about it. For a drama, there's practically no story. There's a man, he's a professor, his wife wants a divorce, the man she's in love with dies in a car accident, the man's son has his bar mitzvah, and it's done. The divorce never goes through, so that's up in the air. The man's supposed to be tenured, but we never see it. The man's brother gets in trouble for soliciting prostitution, but there's no resolution. The neighbor supposedly is encroaching on the man's property line to build a shed, but the lawyer who investigated it dropped dead of a heart attack. The son who's a pothead never had a chance to pay back his dealer. And it ENDS with a tornado on it's way. It ends, as the tornado touches down.
It's like The Coen Brothers intentionally tried to throw as many little ideas into a movie and then leave ALL of them unresolved.
Piece of shit movie, all around. The acting is okay, but if you've seen one family of Jewish caricatures in the 1960s, you've seen them all. It's not particularly well acted. The dialogue isn't particularly all that profound. Basically, this movie was well-liked by critics and honored accordingly because it was made by The Coen Brothers. If nothing else, A Serious Man is their experiment to see if they could make the biggest steaming pile of shit and see if it gets rave reviews from the idiotic American cultural elite.
Mission Accomplished. Now, maybe next time you'll get back to making movies that make some fucking sense.
I didn't think I'd find a movie in the field of 10 that was worse than The Blind Side. That's the most damning criticism I can give of this fucking waste of time
