I've also been thinking a lot about how it's entirely reasonable to hate people for no reason. They say if you try to please everyone, you're a doormat. I've decided to just completely stop giving a shit. Of course, that doesn't mean being rude all the time, I don't want to be some bitchass who's just bitter and angry all the time. Essentially, I just want to embrace my inner Daniel Plainview.
But, getting back to the music, it's interesting that even in the field of music criticism they manage to churn through the bands like a meat thresher. Like the Strokes, who went from being Everyone's Favorite Band and the Band To Save Rock N' Roll, who peaked in the weeks preceeding their follow-up album, to being a sad, redundant piece of filler, outshined by the likes of Vampire Weekend and My Chemical Romance. Or a band like Thursday, whose debut emo-licious effort on a major label engendered thoughts of Staying Power. Now, they routinely garner 2-star reviews as elitist writers snicker between sips of appletinis and extoll the virtues of Animal Collective.
Then there's And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead. They seemingly broke through the cycle of making and killing a band by starting out small and building a following, charting here and there with a low-level indie hit. They never really managed to put together a Complete Album until 2005 when they dropped Worlds Apart on us like a sonic atom bomb. Their follow-up, So Divided, regressed somewhat to their uneven songcraft of the past, but they still flashed brilliant the promise of Worlds Apart. Now, it's 2009, and another album's out, called The Century of Self. I haven't listened to it yet, unfortunately, but it's on its way. But, that's not the point. The point is, they're coming to Seattle in a couple weeks, and if I want I can see them for a measly $12. This is a band I've listened to regularly for the better part of six years now, and they can't get more than $12 for a show? Shared with two local bands to boot?
I tell you, I already feel for Interpol, Cold War Kids, Wolf Parade, MGMT, and Franz Ferdinand. Hell, even Ben Folds is referenced as irrelevant in the media! Kings of Leon might survive, and I'm pretty sure The Black Keys are safe, but it's tough to be a young buzz band. As soon as you've whiffed what's deemed to be your fair share of the hype-light, you're dropped like a pair of hooker's hole-ridden panties for the next band YOU need to KNOW.
Personally, I'll take the latest Electric Six effort, with the warts and moles, over some of this jingle-jangley new shit.
